The Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach. Over Six Decades of Good Works! 2022 updates
What do you call seventy-plus individuals working tirelessly to help the children of our community? The answer is the Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach! Since the club was founded in 1961, generations of men and women have taken time to give back to their town. Whether it is awarding substantial scholarships to help needy youngsters achieve their collegiate goals or serving hungry July 4th Parade attendees a delicious pancake breakfast, club members are busy year-round donating time and energy to help those in need or working on activities to raise money for Kiwanis charitable giving.
During Easter, the Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day event, co-chaired by John Etheridge and Shawn Wood, and a team of members and volunteers is an annual family-oriented carnival that entertains tens of thousands of children and their parents at HB Central Park. It is an opportunity for children to fill their baskets with candy, then enjoy entertaining performers on the big stage, or try their hands at games in the many booths that enable charitable and commercial vendors to share their missions. Key Club and KIWINS, club sponsored high school leadership programs, provide service opportunities. They are key helping hands at events like Fun Day or the July 4th Pancake Breakfast. Kiwanis Club members serve as advisers for these clubs in our local high schools.
Kiwanis ANGELS program was the brainchild of Past President Adam Bowermaster. He conceived of a program that would enable a committee of members to give immediate support to individuals or families financial support. They recently covered a month’s rent to help ensure that a young family could avoid becoming homeless! Our military support committee provides meals and entertainment for reserve soldiers and their families as their units deploy or return from duty overseas.
Our new President, Dr. Van Vu is doing an outstanding job as the club's leader. In addition to hosting fundraising events in his beautiful Huntington Harbour home, Dr. Vu is leading a drive to increase the club's membership. The club meets at Buon Gusto on Tuesdays at noon. Please come and be our guest for lunch so that you can see firsthand the camaraderie that is the glue that keeps our members energized to accomplish good works for our community!
